An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
