Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
