Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such medications should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
