Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
