TikTok Influencers Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

This medication is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

According to the social media company, the platform has taken down violative material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to maintaining the service safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with numerous of users, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show dark colored packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has previously seen individuals injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
