Pick of the Week

The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire tackles the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of advancing years. The veteran actress presents a brilliant acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging film star demoted to starring in a workout series on TV. Pushed out thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome procedure titled "The Substance". This produces a younger clone called Sue, leading to a progressively toxic connection between them. This Friday, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful story includes Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a hiatus from writing about world issues to embark on a high-end voyage alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, plus additional filthy rich guests. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship overnight and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to appear at a birthday party in Mallorca for the rich superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, his unique performing skills is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has left the youth frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates the worst. But the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with spooky callers offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, bad makeup and insincerity, yet the lead actress achieves to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor among the team from a group of five – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mind game of fact versus fiction develops. Additional actors take part the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
