Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
